摘要： A package of flexible material of the universal type having a radial opening into the axial opening through which the inner end of the material is led out is wound on a collapsible mandrel. After the collapsible mandrel has been slightly collapsed, end members are positioned on the mandrel and are pushed towards each other to compact the package. The end members are of slightly greater diameter than the package. A tube of shrink-wrap material is then applied over the package extending slightly beyond the end members. Heat is applied by a gun to the end portions of the sleeve to produce a slight shrinking around the edges of the end members and then to the remainder of the sleeve to shrink the tube on the package. Rings are then applied at each end, against the end members, these rings having an outer diameter slightly less than the end members and having a central opening of substantially less diameter than the diameter of the holes in the end members. Heat is then applied to the ends of the package to shrink the shrink-wrap material inwardly over the end members and rings.

摘要： In the winding of a package of flexible material of the universal type with a radial opening, the inner end of the material being led out through the radial opening for twistless payout, in order to make the inner end available when the package is completed and at the same time to provide the radial hole with a guide tube, a rotary switch is connected to a retracting oscillating guide for flexible material which rests on the face of the material being wound and controls a motor mounted inside the mandrel on which the flexible material is being wound. This motor through a cam and follower advances a guide tube, through which the inner end of the material has been threaded, through the radial hole which is formed during the winding at substantially the same rate that the package builds up.

摘要： A package of limp material is wound on the inside of a rotating drum or container having an opening in its wall substantially centrally of its length by feeding the material while conveyed by a current of air through and out of a tube which extends into an opening in one end of the drum which is reciprocated back and forth. The ratio between the number of rotations of the drum per unit of time and the number of reciprocations of the tube is substantially equal to an integral multiple of one-half, so that the limp material is laid up inside the drum in a series of figure-8 bights. The relative speeds of rotation and reciprocation are varied at one point in each layer of bights so as to leave a radial hole in the package opposite the hole in the container through which the inner end of the material is paid out for twistless payout. The container is foraminous and a suction is applied to the outside to assist in laying the material in the inside of the wall.

摘要： In order to facilitate the doffing of packages wound on a spindle carrying a mandrel, and particularly packages wound in the form of successive layers of figure-8s in which the crossovers of the figure-8s progress around the package and a radial opening is provided extending from the outside of the package into the axial opening thereof, through which the free inner end of the material is led out, a shaft is provided having a sleeve slidable thereon on which a mandrel is placed for forming the winding. The shaft has at its free end extending from the machine a part pivoted thereon, and stop mechanism on such extending part to limit movement of the sleeve. By sliding the sleeve outwardly after a wind has been completed, beyond the pivot, the sleeve can drop down to a vertical position, so that the package formed on it can drop off into a box or onto a conveyor.

The coils being pulled off of the interior of the wind are controlled by inwardly tapering members, such as truncated pyramids, projecting inwardly from the end walls. These pyramids are formed by the folding of a blank of cardboard, which has extending flaps which are interengaged with the end flaps of the box to hold the pyramids in position.

This may be a means for holding a loop or elongated piece of the flexible material in a position where it can be easily fished out through the hole when the package is finished; or an arrangement for feeding a pin to which the inner end of the material is attached out through the hole as the package is wound; or to an arrangement for projecting a member out through the hole from the interior of the mandrel. When a pin is fed out through the hole as the package is wound, this pin may protrude beyond the periphery of the package far enough to aid in or to accomplish the formation of the radial hole without the need for speed variations between the spindle and the guide.

摘要： In order to enclose a coil of flexible material in an air-tight manner, a spool with end discs and a spindle portion is enclosed within a sleeve of flexible air-tight plastic. The part of the sleeve between the end pieces is drawn in and held against the spindle portion of the spool, leaving substantial extensions beyond the end pieces at each end. The flexible material is then wound on the spool, and the extensions of the sleeve are folded inwardly to overlap each other and secured to each other in an air-tight manner.
