Abstract: A guidewire having improved torque characteristics in a proximal section of the guidewire. The proximal section has a square cross-section and a plurality of twists along the length of the proximal section. The plurality of twists have a pitch in a range from 1 to 3 twists per 1.0 inch so that the guidewire has less than a 15° torque delay when the proximal section is subjected to torsional forces
