Abstract: An aircraft wing has a leading edge, a fixed wing portion and a leading-edge spoiler device. The spoiler device is hingedly mounted relative to the fixed wing portion adjacent the leading edge, moveable between retracted and deployed positions. In the retracted position a spoiler surface forms a continuous surface with a fixed wing portion upper aerodynamic surface, and in the deployed position the spoiler surface is rotated relative to the upper aerodynamic surface. In the retracted position the spoiler surface has a first portion forward of the hinge and a second portion aft of the hinge. A center of pressure of the local wing section acts on the spoiler surface providing a moment about the hinge in a first direction to bias the spoiler device to the retracted position and providing a moment about the hinge in a second, opposite direction, rotating the spoiler device to the deployed position.

Abstract: An aircraft is disclosed having a wing, the wing having a fixed wing with a wing tip device moveably mounted about a hinge at the tip thereof. The wing tip device is operable between a flight configuration, and a load alleviating configuration for load alleviation during flight. The aircraft includes a restraining assembly operable between a restraining mode in which the wing tip device is held in the flight configuration using a restraining force such as by a brake, and a releasing mode in which the restraining force on the wing tip device is released, such that the wing tip device may adopt the load alleviating configuration.

Abstract: An apparatus (1000) is provided for controlling a movable wing tip device (9) of an aircraft (1). The apparatus includes an actuator (15) for moving the wing tip device from a load-alleviating configuration to a flight configuration; and a processor (10) which generates a signal for controlling operation of the aircraft so as to reduce the force required for the actuator to move the wing tip device from the load-alleviating configuration to the flight configuration. The apparatus may be included on an aircraft (1) and used in a method of moving the wing tip device from the load-alleviating configuration to the flight configuration during flight.
