Abstract: A system that hosts computing resources may implement optimistically granting permission to host computing resources. A request for permission to host a computing resource may be received by a control plane. If the control plane determines that the resource host is the first to request permission to host the resource, then the control plane may store an indication of permission that blocks other resource hosts from obtaining permission to host the computing resource and sending an acknowledgement of permission to the resource host that requested permission.

Abstract: A block-based storage system hosts logical volumes that are implemented via multiple replicas of volume data stored on multiple resource hosts in different failure domains. Also, the block-based storage service allows multiple client computing devices to attach to a same given logical volume at the same time. A membership group authority authorizes sequence numbers for a given logical volume and an associated membership group. The members of the membership group ensure that the members are in agreement on the latest sequence number for the given logical volume before responding to read or write requests directed to the given logical volume.

In order to prevent unnecessary failovers, a primary node storing a primary replica is configured with a health check application programmatic interface (API) and a secondary node storing a secondary replica determines whether or not to initiate a failover based on the health of the primary replica.

Abstract: Generally described, one or more aspects of the present application correspond to techniques for creating multiple encrypted block store volumes of data from an unencrypted source. These encryption techniques can use a transform fleet as an intermediary use between the unencrypted source and the encrypted volumes. The transform fleet can obtain data of the volume from one or both of two sources—an object storage “snapshot” a block storage “source volume”—and can then apply the appropriate encryption key for performing the encryption of a particular volume.

Abstract: Memory is identified for a first set of histogram buckets for a metric with bucket value ranges distributed according to a first function, and a second set of histogram buckets with bucket value ranges distributed according to a second function. The second set of buckets overlaps with a metric value range targeted for enhanced granularity analysis. After the histogram is updated in response to obtaining metric values, a representation of at least some of the buckets is sent to a destination.

Abstract: Aspects relate to a framework for utilizing a single API request to manage the creation of consistent snapshots for a set of volumes attached an individual instance in a distributed computing environment. Responsive to receipt of an API request identifying the instance, the multi-volume snapshot service identifies a set of volumes attached to the identified instance. The identified set of volumes can be processed or filtered to eliminate specific volumes or types of volumes, such as boot volumes. In the event that any snapshot creation attempt fails, the multi-volume snapshot service fails the API request and can delete any snapshot data generated prior to the failure.

Abstract: Techniques for are described which enable users of a service provider network to manage local storage devices connected to computer systems of the service provider network as a service. A service provider network provides an application programming interface (API) that enables users to manage local storage devices in association with compute instances created by users using a hardware virtualization service of the service provider network. The API can be used to attach local storage devices to compute instances (that is, make local storage devices available for use as a block storage device), detach local storage devices from compute instances (that is, make local storage devices unavailable for use by a compute instance and possibly available for use by other compute instances on the same computer system), among other possible operations.
