Abstract: A lighting tube provides a path from the anode to the cathode in which the kinetic energy of the electrons is maintained substantially within the range of the excitation energies of visible photons, and in particular the excitation energies of yellow light. Magnets are arranged to provide a magnetic field that is substantially perpendicular to the electric field between anode and cathode. The orthogonal electrical and magnetic fields along the path are provided with values that accelerate the electrons but limit the maximum kinetic energy. Low pressure gas may be provided in the tube.
