Abstract: Disclosed herein are a method of preparing a product including one or more product compounds selected from the group consisting of aliphatic polyols having three or more hydroxy groups and a total number of carbon atoms of 5 or more, a method of using compounds selected from the group consisting of aliphatic tricarboxylic acids, esters thereof, anhydrides thereof, and salts thereof as starting compounds for making the product compounds, and a method of using a heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst in a method of preparing a product including one or more of the product compounds.
