Abstract: An improved process for the production of polyamides by the activated anionic polymerisation of lactams having at least 6 ring members in the presence of an activator and of a catalytically active solution of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal lactamate in a solvent mixture of Alpha -pyrrolidone and a lactam having at least 7 ring members, the improvement comprises the addition of 0.1 to 25 % by weight of at least one alcohol having 3-21 carbon atoms and 0 to 35 % by weight of at least one carboxylic acid N-alkyl-amide which is liquid at room temperature to said catalytically active solution.
