    Abstract: A vehicle hydraulic braking system is disclosed which includes a single device which not only provides a power assist to the vehicle operator when the brakes are applied, but also serves as an adaptive braking modulator. The device includes a housing defining a pressure chamber therewithin, and a number of pistons, one piston for each control channel of the adaptive braking system, which are slidably mounted within the chamber. When the vehicle operator effects a brake application, a valve within the housing admits high pressure fluid from a pressure source into the pressure chamber for urging the pistons in a brake-applying direction. However, when the adaptive braking system senses an incipient skid condition at one of the vehicle''s wheels, pressures are equalized on the opposite ends of a corresponding one of the pistons, to thereby permit a spring to yieldably urge the piston in a brake release direction, thereby relieving the braking pressure in the affected brake.

    Abstract: A hydraulic brake booster is disclosed which provides a power assist to the vehicle operator when the operator applies the vehicle''s brakes. The brake booster includes a first valve which restricts flow of fluid through the vehicle''s hydraulic system to develop back pressure in the latter, thereby providing a source of fluid pressure which is used to operate the booster. A back-up fluid supply is provided which is stored in a conventional fluid pressure accumulator. A second valve within the booster housing is actuated when a malfunction prevents normal development of fluid pressure in the booster. When this occurs, the second valve is opened to communicate the high pressure fluid stored in the accumulator into the booster to provide the power assist. A charging valve is also provided in the vehicle''s hydraulic system which is adapted to develop back pressure in the latter to communicate at least a portion of the fluid flowing through the system into the accumulator to charge the latter when the hydraulic system functions normally.

    Abstract: A pressure limiting device for a hydraulic brake booster is disclosed which limits the fluid pressure level in the pressure chamber of the booster to a predetermined maximum level. The pressure limiter includes a differential pressure responsive piston which shifts into engagement with the end of the spool valve used to control communication between the booster pressure chamber and a pressure source when the pressure level in the pressure chamber attains the predetermined maximum value. After the piston engages the end of the spool valve, the latter may not be shifted further from the brake release position to admit higher fluid pressures into the pressure chamber.

    Abstract: A hydraulic brake booster is disclosed which includes a housing defining a bore therewithin, a boost piston which is slidably mounted in the bore and cooperates with one end of the latter to define a pressure chamber between the piston and the end of the bore, and a valve which controls fluid communication between a pressure source and the pressure chamber. A valve actuation rod is controlled by the vehicle operator and includes an inner member for operating the valve and an outer member which is responsive to the fluid pressure level in the chamber to transmit reaction forces to the vehicle operator, thereby providing brake ''''feel''''. The outer member is effective to transmit reaction forces only when the pressure level in the pressure chamber exceeds a predetermined value. Therefore, when the vehicle operator initially applies the brakes of the vehicle, only a very small reaction force will be transmitted through the valve operating rod. However, when the pressure level in the pressure chamber exceeds the predetermined value, a substantially greater portion of the force generated by the fluid pressure in the pressure chamber is transmitted to the vehicle operator.

    Abstract: A hydraulic boost device for brakes having a housing with a bore therein in communication with an inlet and an outlet. A booster piston is slidably received in the housing so that one end of the piston communicates with a pressure chamber which is in fluid communication with the bore. Valve means is slidably located in the bore for controlling fluid communication between the inlet, outlet and pressure chamber. Brake pedal operated means including a push rod and ratio changer levers are interconnected with the booster piston and the valve means so that brake pedal and push rod travel during a normal braking operation with hydraulic power assist will always be at some predetermined ratio to piston travel. Should a hydraulic failure occur in the boost device during a brake application, means effectively restricts push rod movement with respect to the booster piston thereby minimizing pedal travel.

    Abstract: A hydraulic brake booster is disclosed which is normally operated by fluid pressure delivered to the booster from the vehicle''s power steering pump. However, an auxiliary fluid supply is also provided which delivers pressurized fluid to the booster when the vehicle''s power steering pump fails to operate, due either to a malfunction of the latter or to termination of operation of the vehicle''s engine while the vehicle is in motion. The auxiliary fluid supply includes an accumulator which is charged by pressurized fluid from the power steering pump while the latter operates normally. A conduit is provided which communicates the accumulator directly into the booster pressure chamber. A control valve is provided which controls communication of fluid from the accumulator to the pressure chamber. The control valve is operated by the operator-operated spool which also controls fluid communication between the power steering pump and the booster upon actuation of the spool valve after operation of the power steering pump terminates. The control valve is responsive to the fluid pressure level in the pressure chamber such that the control valve remains closed as long as high pressure fluid exists in the pressure chamber, but may be easily operated when a relatively low pressure level exists in the pressure chamber.
