    Abstract: The present disclosure is directed primarily to a method of producing valuable products from aqueous solutions of lignin and lignin derivatives. Aqueous solutions of the lignin and derivatives thereof are available as commercial solutions, can be made from solids or semi-solid mixtures thereof or are available as waste effluents from pulp producing mills. With respect to the latter source, the inventive method not only permits the obtention of valuable products therefrom, but also reduces the amount of non-biodegradable and toxic materials normally contained therein to be eliminated prior to discharge. In addition, the method reduces the color of the final discharge. Basically, the method entails the addition to the lignin or lignin derivative solution of a polyvalent metal salt, the cation of which will react with a portion of the lignin solution to produce a water-insoluble precipitate, acidification of the precipitate and final treatment with a basic solution. The final products possess utilities as scale and precipitate agents for aqueous systems, namely steam producing and cooling water systems.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method of scrubbing waste flue gases derived from basic oxygen furnace steel producing operations. The invention specifically calls for the spraying of the flue gases with an aqueous medium containing the combination comprising in a weight ratio basis of 1:10 to 10:1 of a substantially linear watersoluble sulfonated polystyrene and an organo-phosphonic acid derivative having the structural formula (X)2N-R-N(X)2 where R is a lower alkyl of from 1 to 7 carbon atoms, X is hydrogen or the group - CH2PO3M2, where M is a watersoluble cation, the compound being further characterized in that at least one but preferably all X''s are - CH2PO3M2. In certain instances it is desirable to use in conjunction with the invention a water-soluble lignosulfonate.

The invention specifically calls for the spraying of the flue gases with an aqueous medium containing the combination comprising in a weight ratio basis of 1:10 to 10:1 of an acrylic acid polymer having an average number molecular weight of from about 750 to about 100,000 and an organo-phosphonate having the chemical formula:

    WHERE M IS AN INTEGER OF 1 TO 10, R is hydrogen or alkyl of 1:4 carbonatoms and M is hydrogen or a water-soluble cation. The aqueous medium ideally should contain from about 0.5 to about 100 parts per million of the combination.
