Abstract: 965,130. Filter and coalescer elements. BRIGGS FILTRATION CO. April 19, 1962 [Oct. 4, 1961], No. 15390/62. Heading B1D. A filter comprises a hollow cylindrical member made up of a first lamination of fibreglass 14 having fibres disposed in a radial direction parallel with the flow of liquid through the filter and wrapped in cotton gauze 16, a successive layer of spirally-wound fibreglass 18 having fibres disposed radially to the flow of liquid and of greater density than the first layer to effect an increase of filtering action and wrapped in cotton gauze 19, a layer of non- moulded fibreglass convolute wrap 20, a spirally wrapped screen of fibreglass 22 and a layer of fibreglass 24 supported by a spirally wrapped screen of fibreglass 26, which assembly is then heated to bond the layer 24 to the screen 26, before being wrapped with a layer of fibreglass 28 and an outer layer of cellulose acetate felt 32, which is fungus resistant and causes water to coalesce. The resulting construction is then treated with adhesive at its opposite ends and a gasket of resinous or rubber material 34 and a flanged disc support plate 36 of, e.g., metal is joined to each end of the filter to provide reinforcement and a seal. A nylon sock is pulled over the outer layer 32 of the filter and an end cap 40 of, e.g., rubber is placed on each end of the filter.

Abstract: 977,657. Oil filters; gravity separation. C. H. MAY. Dec. 14, 1962 [Jan. 2, 1962], No. 47326/62. Heading B1D. In a filter-separator for removing solid and liquid contaminants from oil, contaminated oil is fed in by inlet 12, Fig. 1, to a first chamber 14, and passes down passage 41 provided in filter unit 40, which is surrounded by canister 38 and is located vertically in second chamber 50. Oil and contaminating liquid, i.e. water, flow radially out of the filter unit, which traps solid contaminants, and coalesces the water. Canister 38, the surface of which is hydrophobic, retains the water and allows oil to flow through into chamber 50, to be removed by outlets 60, 62 located adjacent opposite ends of the filter unit. Coalesced water descends to the bottom of the annular space between 40 and 38 and drains through opening 66 under the action of gravity, assisted by vacuum produced in chamber 32 and sump 36 by means of Venturi nozzle 30 fitted in the oil inlet line 12. If the oil contains little or no water, oil will collect in sump 36 and will be recirculated by the Venturi nozzle to chamber 14. Discharge of water is controlled by solenoid valve 82 actuated by conductors 84, 86. Alternatively a float valve may be used. A preferred filter unit comprises a perforated copper-silicon tube 42 surrounded by layers of moulded fibre-glass and acetate felt, contained by a knitted cotton sleeve. Canister 38 may comprise a 100-mesh screen of nickel alloy, rendered hydrophobic by a coating of polytetrafluoroethylene, and retained by an expanded aluminium mesh. Baffles 56 and 58 are provided at each end of canister 38 adjacent oil outlets 60, 62 to prevent coalesced water being drawn into the oil. A plurality of filter units may be provided in chamber 50, each receiving a flow of oil from chamber 14. Specification 821,877 is referred to.
