摘要: The force modulation system for a drill bit includes a cutter, a holder, a holder retention device, and a first force member. The cutter fits in the holder, and the holder fits in the drill bit. The holder retention device exerts a holder retention force in a first direction. The first force member exerts a first force in a second direction. The second direction is angled offset to the first direction so as that the cutting profile of the force modulation system is now variable in the second direction, according to the first force. There can also be a second force member to exert a second force in the first direction for more variability of the cutting profile in the first direction. The second force member can be made integral with the first force member.

摘要: A drill bit for cutting formation comprises a bit body, a plurality of cutters, a plurality of blades with pockets to accommodate the cutters respectively. Each of the plurality of cutters has an ultra-hard layer, two side facets extending obliquely inward from the substrate to a top surface of the ultra-hard layer, a convex portion between the two side facets. The convex portion comprises a transition surface and the transitional surface is convex as it extends between adjacent the two side facets. The curvature of the transitional surface varies along the cutter axis with the curvature at the cutting edge larger than the curvature of the cutter circumferential surface.

For a given weight on the bit, the cutter will sink into the rock deeper which can lead to better stability and more effective rock removal.

摘要: A cutting element comprises a cylindrical substrate, a table bonded to the substrate, a working surface on the top of the table, and a plurality of dimples on the working surface. The table is made of super-abrasive material. The super-abrasive material can be PCD. Surface patterns of the table can reduce contact friction between the rock and the cutting element. Therefore, heat on the table can be reduced and thermal damage to the table is decreased. This results in improved cutting element service life.
