Abstract: An ilmenite up-grading process characterised by the step of leaching the ilmenite with a hydrochloric acid solution containing at least 10% by weight of HCl and at least 5% by weight of one or more soluble chlorides. Particularly suitable soluble chlorides include ferrous chloride, manganese chloride, magnesium chloride, nickel chloride, calcium chloride and ammonium chloride.
