Abstract: A forming tool for use during a process of converting a glass tube into a glass container, includes a base portion comprising a fluid cavity for containing a fluid and an insertion portion extending from the base portion. The insertion portion includes an external surface sized to fit into an opening of the glass tube. In embodiments, the insertion portion comprises a fluid opening extending from an interior surface thereof to the external surface, the fluid opening configured to deliver the fluid from the fluid cavity between the insertion portion and the glass tube. In embodiments, the forming tool comprises a thermally conductive insert extending through the base portion and the insertion portion, the thermally conductive insert extending through the fluid cavity such that the fluid in the fluid cavity regulates a temperature of the thermally conductive insert.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to porous ceramic articles and a method of making the same. The porous ceramic articles have a porosity (P) as a fraction in a range of about 0.3 to about 0.7; a permeability factor PQ>0.025, wherein PQ is (Kbulk)/(P·d502), Kbulk being bulk permeability in Darcy, and d50 being the mean pore size in micrometers (μm); a tortuosity in a range of about 1.8 to 3; and a median pore size diameter d50 in a range of about 10 μm to about 35 μm. The porous ceramic articles can have an interconnected bead microstructure comprising beads and bead connections, PQ is directly proportional to bead size, and wherein in a random cross section through the body, the beads appear as globular portions.

Abstract: A method for producing a glass sleeve having a first flattened portion and shaping tools for forming such glass sleeves. A method can comprise providing a substantially cylindrical glass tube—optionally polished or otherwise treated to reduce or remove interior imperfections—heating the glass tube to a temperature within the softening range of the glass, introducing one or more shaping tools having a generally D-shaped or generally rectangular cross-section into the enclosed space, and moving the one or more shaping tools against the inner curved surface to deform the tube, forming the first flattened portion. The one or more shaping tools can be made of any suitable material, for example: steel coated with boron nitride; porous graphite or carbon air bearings; or a nickel-based alloy (e.g., Inconel).
