Abstract: A method of and apparatus for shearing the edges of a sheet of metal in which a sheet is positioned with its longitudinal axis effectively parallel to the cutting line of shears, the sheet is moved towards the cutting line, that edge of the sheet adjacent the shears is cut, the sheet is rotated through 180* about an axis parallel to the cutting line and the other edge of the sheet is moved towards and cut by the shears, wherein the sheet is initially positioned relative to the shears in dependence on the deviation of the edges to be cut from linearity, the deviations being calculated using detectors which detect the positions of the edges adjacent and remote from the cutting line as the sheet is moved towards the shears.
