摘要： The present invention is directed to a data cartridge library that, in one embodiment, is comprised of: (a) a frame or cabinet that defines an interior space; (b) a multi-piece magazine that forms a portion of the frame; (c) a drive bay with a full-height drive space that is capable of accommodating a full-height drive and of being altered to accommodate two, half-height drives; (c) a picker that employs a crank that is capable of rotating 360 degrees and that carries a first cam driver that cooperates with a first cam follower to actuate a grasper that is capable of grasping and releasing a data cartridge, and a second cam driver that cooperates with a second cam follower to move the grasper towards and away from a location at which a data cartridge is located; (d) an elevator for moving the picker within a portion of the interior space and that is comprised of a first and second drive systems for respectively driving the first and second ends of an elevator carriage and a shaft for transferring power from the first drive system to the second drive system; (e) a robotics module that can be removed from the interior of the frame and is comprised of the picker and a substantial portion of the elevator; (f) an access port that allows a user to access the interior space and does not comprise a hinge; and (g) a universal bay that provides a space for accommodating electronic components that provide for enhanced operation and that can be divided into sub-spaces. Another embodiment of the invention is directed to a magazine that is used to move data cartridges into and out of the library via an entry/exit port. In one embodiment, the magazine comprises a box-structure that is capable of holding a plurality of data cartridges, a dust cover, and a coupling structure comprised of a member that extends away from the side wall of the box structure.

摘要： The present invention provides a magazine-based library that is capable of operating on a magazine data storage element comprised of a plurality of hard disk drives and an interface that allows data to be transferred between the hard disk drives and a host computer. One embodiment of the library comprises a plurality of shelves that are each capable of supporting at least one magazine data storage element, one or more drives, and a magazine transport that is capable of moving a magazine data storage element between any one of the shelves and any one of the drives. The present invention also provides a magazine data storage element drive that is capable of being used in stand-alone mode, i.e., outside of a magazine-based library.

摘要： The present invention is directed to a data cartridge library system that realizes a reduced cost by reducing the number of certain components, especially expensive components, that are needed to perform certain functions within the library. With respect to certain functions, a reduced cost is realized by using lower precision componentry in combination with componentry that compensates for lower precision while still providing a reduced component cost with respect to a given function. In one embodiment of the invention, a data cartridge picker is provided that: (1) uses a single electro-mechanical device for the functions of grasping a data cartridge, retracting a grasped cartridge from a drive/storage location, inserting a grasped cartridge into a drive/storage location, and releasing a grasped cartridge once position in a desired location; (2) is capable of compensating for variations in cartridge positioning; (3) has a gripping mechanism that moves in a sinusiodal manner; and (4) avoids the wear and tear associated with moving fully retracted gripper mechanism that is not holding a data cartridge from a fully retracted position to a position at which a cartridge can be retrieved. Another embodiment provides a elevator mechanism for moving the cartridge picker in which the guiding portion of the mechanism is also part of the portion of the mechanism that moves the cartridge picker. A further embodiment employs a face plate extension that facilitates insertion of a data cartridge into a drive by a low precision cartridge transport device. Yet another embodiment provides a removable data cartridge holder that: (1) includes a box-like structure for holding data cartridges and a dust cover that can be placed over the opening of the box-like structure when the holder is not in use and when the holder is in use, attached to the box-like portion; (2) an orientation structure that prevents insertion of a data cartridge into the box-like holder if the cartridge is improperly oriented; and (3) retention clips for preventing accidental dislodgement of a data cartridge located in the box-like structure.
