Abstract: A device for the continuous longitudinal seam welding of tubes particularly by electron beam welding, includes a pair of opposed rollers arranged with their mating groove portions in opposition on a bracket which may be rotated so as to shift the rollers in transverse directions. The arrangement includes means for scanning the strip edges of a sheet material which is fed and formed into the form of a slotted tube and adjusting the edges so that the tube is fed between the rollers with the longitudinal groove or slot centered therebetween. The scanning elements are arranged along the strip edges to be welded and actuate a control for a motor which is employed for shifting the grooved rollers with the tube in order to control the position of the weld seam for the purpose of centering the seam in respect to the electron beam. In a preferred arrangement the workpiece is guided by pressure rolls arranged on respective opposite sides of the workpiece which are advantageously carried on a rocker arm so that they may be jointly pivoted about the axis of the workpiece. A second pressure roll pair for guiding the workpiece is advantageously arranged on the rocker arm at a location between the contactless scanning device and the welding pressure roll pair. The second pressure roll pair forces the two band edges of the sheet to be formed firmly together and firmly grips the workpiece running therebetween in the same manner as the welding pressure roll pair.

Abstract: This invention relates in general to a method and apparatus for welding tubes from a metal sheet which is formed into a tubular configuration with a longitudinally extending slot or welding gap, and which includes sensor means adjacent the slot for accurately positioning a welding device. The welding device comprises an electron beam welder having means associated therewith for shifting the beam or the holder for the beam welder in accordance with the position of the longitudinal slot of the formed tube prior to welding. The position of the beam may be regulated by deflecting it electrostatically or electromagnetically and the feeler or sensor which is associated with the formed slot of the tube is connected either electrically or mechanically for effecting the shifting of the beam. The sensor may comprise a three-pole magnet having windings between adjacent poles and which is oriented over the gap of the tube to be welded and which is connected so that the variations of voltage in the windings caused by the shifting of the gap of the tube which is to be centered in respect to the welding apparatus will provide the necessary control pulse for the shifting of the electron beam for centering it during the welding. The same control may be effected by a mechanical shifting device, by an air deflecting device, or by a mirror operated arrangement.

Abstract: A rolling mill includes an arrangement of a plurality of grooving rollers or rolls in a row with forming rollers which are carried in a mounting frame for operation on a continuously fed strip or plate to bend the plate into a tubular configuration which is fed as formed into association with the rolls of the grooving stands. A feature of the construction is that a single forming roller and two sets of upper and lower forming rollers are arranged on a frame which includes a pivotally mounted lower frame member carrying the lower rollers and a pivotally mounted upper frame member carrying the upper rollers. The frame members are arranged in a rectangular configuration and mounted for pivotal movement about a lower end adjacent the grooving stands. The opposite end is connected to a member which may be moved vertically by suitable driving mechanism to change the elevation of the entire forming roller sets carried in the frame. In addition, the upper rollers of the two roller sets which are spaced further away from the grooving stands than the single forming roller may be shifted so that they may be lifted upwardly from the material being operated upon.
