    Abstract: A problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal composition having negative dielectric anisotropy (Δε), large refractive index anisotropy (Δn), a high nematic phase-isotopic liquid phase transition temperature (TNI), a low solid phase-nematic phase transition temperature (TCN), sufficiently low rotational viscosity (γ1), and large elastic constant (K33), and also to provide a VA-mode, FFS-mode, or IPS-mode liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal composition, satisfying a high response speed, high VHR, and excellent low-temperature storage stability, and having no or very few display defects. According to the liquid crystal composition of the present invention, the problem is solved by a liquid crystal composition containing compounds represented by general formula (S1), general formula (S2), and general formula (S3).

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a nematic liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound and having a negative dielectric anisotropy (Δε) and PSA or PSVA liquid crystal display element produced by using the same. The liquid crystal composition according to the present invention can provide PSA or PSVA liquid crystal display element, in which a sufficient pretilt angle is included, the amount of remaining monomer is small, there are no or almost no problems, e.g., alignment defects and display defects, arisen from a low voltage holding rate (VHR) and the like, and excellent response performance is exhibited. A liquid crystal display element using the liquid crystal composition according to the present invention is useful for an active-matrix-drive liquid crystal display element and can be applied to PSA, PSVA, and other liquid crystal display elements.

    Abstract: A polymerizable compound-containing liquid crystal composition of the present invention relates to a liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound represented by general formula (I) and a compound represented by general formula (II) and can be used for a liquid crystal display device imparted with liquid crystal aligning ability by polymerization. The polymerizable liquid crystal composition is required to cause no precipitation in a wide temperature range and have a low viscosity corresponding to fast switching, and a liquid crystal display device using the composition is required to have more stable alignment after polymerization and to cause no defect in display characteristics. In the present invention, the problems can be solved using a specified compound.
