Abstract: Processes of producing nanoparticles from solid phase precursor non-nanoparticles. Contacting a solid phase precursor non-nanoparticle selected from oxides of metals and metalloids, carbides of metals and metalloids, nitrides of metals and metalloids, borides of metals and metalloids, silicides of metals and metalloids, and phosphides of metals and metalloids, and mixtures thereof, with one or more onium ions in water in a vessel.
