An annealing separator for use on grain-oriented silicon steel strip comprises a magnesium oxide base composition containing rare earth metal oxides. The rare earth metal oxides are present in an amount of 0.8 to 30% by weight of the composition; but in the lower range of 0.8 to 5% by weight, and preferably up to 7% by weight, the oxides have a particle size of less than 325 mesh, and a fraction of 35-55% by weight smaller than 500 mesh. Alkali metal silicate may be present in an amount 5 to 45% by weight. Strip coated with annealing separator of the invention is characterized in that the coating is almost totally free of surface cavities, in that the denitriding and desulfuring rates are greatly accelerated, in that the surface resistivity of the coating is substantially increased, and in that the coating adheres more strongly to the strip.

A process for inhibiting grain growth in the production of a single oriented continuously cast silicon steel strip with high magnetic characteristics, including the steps of continuously casting a silicon steel strip; solubilizing iron sulfide in the silicon steel strip by uniformly heating the strip to a temperature between 1050.degree. and 1250.degree. C; slowly cooling the silicon steel strip to a temperature below 500.degree. C to precipitate dissolved sulfur as manganese sulfide; and hot-rolling the continuously cast silicon steel strip at a temperature over 1300.degree. C.

The present invention refers to a method for determination and control of the amount of nitrogen dissolved in metallic liquid phases and to a device permitting, when placed in the steel producing plant and for instance in the tundish or in the continuous casting mold, the determination of nitrogen content directly from the liquid phase. Such a device can point out possible nitrogen pick-up in real-time, thus permitting to immediately intervene.
