Abstract:
The specification and drawings disclose a method and apparatus for rolling plural metal strips simultaneously to form thinner metal strip or foil. The method allows use of larger diameter rolls and simpler roll supporting structure and mill controls than heretofore possible in foil forming. The disclosed method contemplates the provision of a plurality of metal strips which are then bonded together in juxtaposed relationship with a thin layer of matrix material which substantially completely covers the opposed faces of the strips to form a composite comprising alternate layers of metal strip and matrix material. Thereafter the composite is rolled to reduce the strips to the desired thickness. Subsequently, the bond between the strips is destroyed and the strips are separated. According to certain embodiments, strong or low ductility metals can be formed into foils by bonding them in the central portion of the composite. Weaker or more ductile metals form the outer portions of the composite. Apparatus capable of carrying out the method is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A method for manufacturing sandwich panels of the type in which a pair of facing sheets 12 are separated by a multiplicity of pins 14 is disclosed. Concepts and techniques for fabricating the structure in a leachable matrix are discussed. Selective roll bonding and cutting are employed to form pins of accurate dimension contour and spacing.
Abstract:
A class of iron base materials which derive improved properties from the presence of a finely dispersed titanium diboride phase is described. The materials comprise a ferrous matrix containing a fine relatively uniform dispersion of titanium diboride particles are typically less than 0.1 micron in diameter and are present in number densities of 10.sup.10 per mm.sup.3 or greater. These materials are produced by the rapid solidification of an iron alloy containing titanium and boron. Powder metallurgy techniques may be employed.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for manufacturing rapidly cooled powder particles is disclosed. Concepts discussed include both convection cooling and conduction cooling of molten material from which the particles are fabricated.By one effective technique of the present invention, seed particles are dropped across the path of a molten droplet stream causing impact and solidification of the molten droplets on the seed particles. Particles of increased size which are formed of conductively quenched material result.

Abstract:
In the manufacture of sandwich panels, a filler assembly is made up of rib elements and core elements that are roll bonded into a unitary structure, and slices are then cut from the unitary structure forming filler assemblies to be positioned between surface sheets. The surface sheets and the filler assemblies are then bonded together to form the panel.
