Abstract: Provided are: a method of manufacturing an optical element that can display a clear image having no blurriness in AR glasses or the like; and an optical element that is manufactured using this manufacturing method. The manufacturing method include: a step of forming a photo-alignment film, performing interference exposure to form an alignment pattern, and applying a liquid crystal composition to the photo-alignment film to form a first liquid crystal layer; a liquid crystal layer lamination step of forming a photo-alignment film, performing interference exposure to form an alignment pattern, applying a liquid crystal composition to the photo-alignment film to form a liquid crystal layer for lamination, peeling off the liquid crystal layer for lamination from the photo-alignment film, and laminating the peeled liquid crystal layer for lamination on the first liquid crystal layer or the liquid crystal layer for lamination, the liquid crystal layer lamination step being optionally performed once or more; a step of peeling off the first liquid crystal layer from the photo-alignment film; a step of forming an adhesive layer having a surface roughness Ra of 15 nm or less on the light guide plate and/or the first liquid crystal layer; and a step of bonding the light guide plate and the first liquid crystal layer using the adhesive layer.

Abstract: Provided are a cholesteric liquid crystal layer that diffracts specific circularly polarized light in a specific wavelength range by transmission, and a method of forming the cholesteric liquid crystal layer. The cholesteric liquid crystal layer is obtained by immobilizing a cholesteric liquid crystalline phase, in which the cholesteric liquid crystal layer has a liquid crystal alignment pattern in which a direction of an optical axis derived from a liquid crystal compound changes while continuously rotating in at least one in-plane direction, in a cross-section of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer observed with a scanning electron microscope, bright portions and dark portions derived from the cholesteric liquid crystalline phase are tilted at 80° or more with respect to a main surface of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer.

Abstract: Provided are an optical element, including a plurality of optically anisotropic layers, each of which has an in-plane alignment pattern in which orientations of optical axes derived from a liquid crystal compound change continuously and rotationally along at least one in-plane direction, in a thickness direction, in which the optically anisotropic layers each have regions where lengths over which the orientations of the optical axes rotate by 180° in the one direction are different from each other, and at least one of the plurality of optically anisotropic layers is an inclined optically anisotropic layer having a region where a plurality of pairs of bright lines and dark lines in a cross-sectional image are present and the pairs of the bright lines and the dark lines are inclined at inclination angles which are different from each other with respect to a normal line of an interface of the optically anisotropic layer.
