The auxiliary starting circuit has input terminals coupled to the output terminals of the inverter; a first output terminal for the first main electrode; a second output terminal for the second main electrode; and an auxiliary electrode arranged on the side of the first output terminal for inducing an auxiliary starting voltage in the auxiliary combustion chamber. The auxiliary starting circuit includes a cascade circuit formed by the auxiliary electrode and the second output terminal of the auxiliary starting circuit, which provides a voltage for starting the high-pressure discharge lamp.

The auxiliary starting circuit comprises a first and a second input terminal (ZE1, ZE2), the first input terminal (ZE1) being coupled to the first output terminal (WA1) of the inverter (10), and the second input terminal (ZE2) being coupled to the second output terminal (WA2) of the inverter (10); a first output terminal (ZA1) for connecting the first main electrode (HaE1) of the high-pressure discharge lamp (LA); a second output terminal (ZA2) for connecting the second main electrode (HaE2) of the high-pressure discharge lamp (LA); and an auxiliary electrode (HiE) for inducing an auxiliary starting voltage in the auxiliary combustion chamber (HiBk), the auxiliary electrode (HiE) being arranged on the side of the first output terminal (ZA1). The auxiliary starting circuit (14) further comprises a cascade circuit, which provides a voltage for starting the high-pressure discharge lamp (LA) at the output of said circuit, the output of the cascade circuit being formed by the auxiliary electrode (HiE) and the second output terminal (ZA2) of the auxiliary starting circuit (14).
