Abstract: 1,121,896. Filter element. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. 7 July, 1967 [21 July, 1966; 25 Feb., 1967], Nos. 32844/66 and 9117/67. Headings B1D and BIT. [Also in Division B5] A filter element, for the air intake or lubricating oil circuit of an I.C. engine, comprises a flat pleated panel of resin-impregnated paper, pleat ends joined to form pockets which open on one face to which a sealing strip 37, of polyvinyl chloride, is secured. Peripheral grooves 30 (Figs. 10-12, not shown) are indented in the pleat crowns, and the flange 45 of a peripheral metal or cardboard frame around the element engages the mould 31 into which the element is pressed and forces the liquid plastics into grooves 30 and between pleats. Frame 41 may be made in one or two pieces and forms part of the finished element. The element is passed through an oven with the mould, to cure the plastics and resin. In Figs. 10-21, the grooves 30 are formed by vibratory wheels or hammers in the uncured paper. In Figs. 4-9, not shown, the grooves are made by pressing the element down on to a central member (20) of the two-part mould in which the sealing strip is formed. In Figs. 1-3. not shown, strips (4) of stiffer plastics are applied to the element before the moulding step, which adds further plastics thereto.
