A mineral mining installation composed of a mineral winning machine such as a plough guided for movement along a conveyor. The plough has a sword plate extending beneath the conveyor and guided at the side of the conveyor remote from the machine. This guidance is provided by guide members attached to the sword plate and secured to a drive chain used for moving the plough. Guard plates are attached to the side of the conveyor remote from the machine and U-shaped cover plates are in turn affixed to the guard plates with the aid of screws and spacers. The guide members and drive chain run in a guide channel defined between the guard plates and cover plates and beneath the spacers. Each guide member is elongate and has a transversely-extending recess in its upper face. A roller or wear resistant insert is accommodated in the recess and seats on a spigot therein. Wearresistant pads are also attached to the guide members. As the sword plate tilts the periphery of the roller or a wear-resistant pad attached to the inner face of the insert is allowed to engage on the guard plates.

A narrow gap is produced between these two members: which members define upper and lower guide passages for a chain used to drive the plough. The sword plate extends through a gap formed between the lower ends of the conveyor and the members. The outer face of each of the members has ribs thereon for connection with shifting rams and the central limb of each member projecting towards the conveyor is of hollow reinforced construction. These webs can be detachable from the remainder of the members.

A mineral mining installation composed of a plough movable along a multi-section conveyor. The plough is constructed from an elongate beam supported in parallelism with and above the mineral face side of the conveyor. The beam is supported at its ends by means of a combination of rigid columns and cutter bit carriers pivotably attached to the beam. The cutter bit carriers engage a guide rail at the mineral face side of the conveyor and the columns are in turn supported on the carriers. The beam and carriers form a parallelogram-type linkage with the guide rail and the carriers pivot to a limited extent as the plough is moved along the conveyor. A further support means extends from the beam over the conveyor and is guided at the goaf side of the conveyor where a drive chain is provided. Sets of cutter bits are attached to the columns and the beam as well as to the cutter bit carriers.

The sword plate is connected to guide means guided in the lower channels and various components, such as bars welded to the lower end of barrier plates, can be used to cooperate with the guide means.

The plough is driven by a chain circulated in haulage and return runs arranged one above another at the side of the conveyor remote from the mineral face and these chain runs are disposed in guide channels defined between plates attached to the side of the conveyor and covers attached to the plates. The guide channels are separated by elongate slide members arranged end-to-end between the plates and the covers. The upper chain run slides in contact with the slide members over its entire length to inhibit whipping of the chain.
