    Abstract: A control system to control slip of a torque converter clutch includes a clutch plant model configured to predict a value of a parameter that relates to torque converter clutch slip as a function of clutch plant model inputs comprising commanded clutch pressure and of torque from the torque generative device. The control system also includes a model predictive controller configured to receive signals that allow determination of a desired value of the parameter that relates to torque converter clutch slip and a predicted value of the parameter that relates to torque converter clutch slip, receive a signal representing reported torque of the torque generative device, identify an optimal commanded clutch pressure value that will result in an optimal value of an objective function based on the clutch plant model, and provide a command signal to an actuator effective to control commanded clutch pressure to the torque converter clutch.

    Abstract: A vehicle, control system for operating a torque converter of a vehicle and a method of operating a torque converter. The control system includes a machine learning model and a model-based controller. The machine learning model is configured to receive a first set of measurements of operational parameters of the torque converter, and determine fit parameters for a model of the torque converter using the first set of measurements. The model-based controller is configured to receive a second set of measurements of operational parameters of the torque converter, determine a clutch pressure for the torque converter from the second set of measurements and the fit parameters, and apply the determined clutch pressure to the torque converter.

    Abstract: A powertrain includes a torque generative device and a torque converter having an impeller, a turbine and a torque converter clutch. A method to control torque converter slip includes a feedforward component and a feedback component. The feedforward component includes monitoring a reference slip, and actual slip, and a turbine speed of the torque converter, determining a desired turbine torque based upon the reference slip and the turbine speed, determining an actual turbine torque based upon the actual slip and the turbine speed, determining a feedforward torque converter clutch pressure command based upon the desired turbine torque, the actual turbine torque, a torque generative device torque, and a TCC gain, and determining feedforward torque converter clutch pressure command. The feedback component modifies the feedforward command pressure based on proportional plus integral plus differential (PID) slip feedback terms.
