Abstract: A system for heat treating cylinder bores within an engine includes a laser head and a controller adapted to cause the laser head to move to each cylinder bore and create a first plurality of hardened pills within each one of a first plurality of positional zones, cause the laser head to move to each cylinder bore and create a second plurality of hardened pills within each one of the first plurality of positional zones, cause the laser head to move to each cylinder bore and create a first plurality of hardened pills within each one of a second plurality of positional zones, cause the laser head to move to each cylinder bore and create a second plurality of hardened pills within each one of the second plurality of positional zones.
