Abstract: A filter contains in a single housing a coarse granulation layer and at least one fine granulation layer down-stream from the coarse-granulation layer so that liquid to be filtered passes downwardly through the coarse layer and then through the fine layer and backwash means are provided for passing the backwash upwardly through the fine layer and then the coarse layer.
