A current fed unrestricted frequency converter (UFC) for supplying power with balanced voltages to a three-phase unbalanced load generates two sets of existence functions for controlling the switching matrices of the UFC to generate positive and negative sequence current components in the load. Existence function generators generating the positive and negative sequence existence functions are phase locked, respectively, to a positive sequence reference signal generated by a clock and a negative sequence reference signal derived by circuits which monitor the negative sequence voltage in the load. Select circuits alternately gate the positive and negative sequence existence functions to the UFC switching matrices in proportion to the detected magnitude of the negative sequence voltage in a sense to drive the negative sequence voltage in the load to zero. A neutral forming transformer eliminates any zero sequence voltage in the load so that all that remains is the positive sequence components of voltage which by definition are balanced.

This information, together with load voltage and load current information is used to determine the firing angles of the VAR generator thyristors for providing compensating current for keeping the source current in phase with the source voltage and for balancing the source currents in a three-phase electrical system. The total computation time for determining the firing angles extends into the half cycle in which correction is to be applied beyond a fixed minimum firing angle.

The voltage regulator system utilizes the reactance of the transmission line in conjunction with reactive current from a VAR generator to compensate for the voltage effect of line current as it flows through the line reactance. The VAR generator is of the parallel capacitor-inductor type where the inductor is controlled by a thyristor switch. The conduction of the thyristor is controlled by utilizing a control system which generates an error signal based on the half period average of line voltage. The error signal is converted to a signal which is proportional to flux linkages by an integrator and then compared with the integral of the voltage signal for determining the conduction angle of the thyristor switches.

An AC/AC frequency changer operating under a one to one frequency ratio has its input coupled to a power system of same frequency and voltage, with an inductor connected between its output and input terminals. The output voltage is controlled so as to deviate by a predetermined amount from the input voltage so that reactive power flows from the output to the input which, owing to the inherent phase inversion in the frequency changer, causes reactive input current and reactive output current to be summed up directly at the input terminals. As a result, the frequency changer requires only a power rating which is half the reactive power which it can supply to the power system.

An apparatus and method for reducing certain harmonics in the output of static inverters. Static inverters which employ a switching device arranged in a bridge circuit to convert direct current power to alternating current power produce undesired harmonics in the output of the inverter. Harmonic neutralization techniques are further improved by the invention utilizing selective notching of the inverter pole voltage and a coordinate phase shift between the set of pole voltages produced by the individual inverters. The notch angles in the individual pole voltage outputs are chosen to minimize or eliminate specific undesired harmonics.

A static VAR generator is taught for use with a source of electrical power and a rapidly varying load. The static VAR generator comprises thyristor switched inductors connected across a capacitor. The gate of the thyristor switch is fired each half cycle in accordance with a predetermined firing angle to provide sufficient inductive current to cancel a portion of the capacitive current to thus provide a net reactive current for the system served. This is done on a half cycle by half cycle basis. A main disconnect switch is connected in parallel with the series combination of a secondary disconnect switch, a diode and a large resistor. The latter combination is connected in series with the parallel combination of the compensating inductor and the compensating capacitor. The secondary disconnect switch is utilized to charge the capacitor to the peak voltage between lines of the electrical system prior to connecting the static VAR generator to the system or prior to disconnecting the static VAR generator from the system. Prior to a disconnecting or connecting operation an oscillating current is introduced between the compensating capacitor and the compensating inductor. This current is found to have the same frequency phase, wave shape and amplitude as the voltage between the lines to which the static VAR generator is connected. The gate control for the thyristor is utilized to fix the phase difference between the oscillating current and the alternating voltage of the system at or near zero. The oscillating voltage caused by the oscillating current is thus equal in phase, frequency, wave shape and magnitude to the alternating voltage of the system. Consequently the main disconnect switch can be opened or closed as desired with zero electrical potential thereacross.
