Abstract: A composite metallic joint assembly may include a composite metal rod having a metal liner and a composite material disposed around the metal liner. A first portion of the composite metal rod may comprise the composite material and the metal liner and a second portion of the composite metal rod may comprise the metal liner exposed at a radially outer surface of the composite metal rod. The metal liner may have a first radial thickness at a first axial position corresponding to the first portion of the composite metal rod and a second radial thickness at a second axial position corresponding to the second portion of the composite metal rod. The second thickness may be greater than the first thickness.

Abstract: A metallic/composite joint may comprise a composite member extending along a centerline axis and a metallic member. The composite member may comprise a cylinder having a flared end. An outer surface of the flared end may be oriented at a first angle relative to the centerline axis. An inner surface of the metallic member may be oriented at a second angle relative to the centerline axis. The inner surface of the metallic member and the outer surface of the composite member may be separated by a first gap at a first location and may be separated by a second gap at a second location. In various embodiments, the composite member may comprise a cylinder having an angled end, an inner surface of the angled end oriented at the first angle and an insert having an outer surface oriented at the second angle.

Abstract: A metallic/composite joint includes a composite member and an insert located at least partially within the composite member. The composite member comprises a cylinder having an angled end extending along a centerline axis, an inner surface of the angled end oriented at a first angle relative to the centerline axis. The insert is located at least partially within the angled end and having an outer surface oriented at a second angle relative to the centerline axis. The first and second angles are oriented to reduce maximum shear stress in the composite member when the insert and composite member are in an installed position.

Abstract: A metallic/composite joint may comprise a composite member having a flared end or an angled end, a liner perimetrically surrounding the composite member, and a metallic member perimetrically surrounding the liner. A first side of the liner contacts the composite member and a second side of the liner contacts the metallic member. The liner perimetrically surrounds at least a portion of the flared end. A through-thickness compressive stiffness of the liner may be less than a similar stiffness of the composite member.
