摘要: A multi-mode optical fiber is used to detect electrical currents or magnetic fields from a remote source. The optical fiber, which serves as the sensor, is composited with metal capable of conducting electricity. Optical radiation is introduced into the fiber from a source which may be either coherent or incoherent. An electrical current is applied to the portion of the electrically conducting optical fiber and a magnetic field is applied to the current-carrying optical fiber. A known value of one permits a determination of the presence or absence of the other through electromotive forces on a metallic conductor in a magnetic field, which are used to induce differential phase shifts (coherent optical radiation input) or losses (incoherent optical radiation input) between the fiber modes. These phase shifts or losses are detected by a suitable detector. For a magnetic field of 1 kGauss, good linearity is obtained in the 5 to 2,000 mA current range. Magnetic fields of about 0.1 G to 1 kG are detected employing a current source of about 5 mA to 50 A.

摘要: There is disclosed a fiber optic coupler for use in single strand fiber systems comprising a device to allow optical access to a single fiber by means of a second fiber which has been attached to it by fusing the glass cladding of the two fibers as by application of heat by a laser. The resulting access coupler provides for coupling both into and out of a single strand of fiber optic waveguide. That is to say, an input optical signal to one single fiber strand can be read out at more than one point on the single fiber or more than one input can be read out at a single point. The coupler is sufficiently low loss to make control systems utilizing single fiber lines rather than bundles a realistic possibility.

摘要: The disclosure is an eyeglass frame including a straight relatively rigid bar having a plurality of notches disposed along its length, and carrying a generally U-shaped nose piece having a tab adapted to be inserted in and locked in the central notch in the bar. The bar also carries a pair of circular lens holders having tabs for insertion in selected notches in the bar so that the spacing between the lens holders and the lenses carried thereby can be adjusted. A headband is also provided having tabs for insertion in notches in the frame bar to hold the frame on the head of the user.

摘要: In order to enable ophthalmic (eyeglass) lenses with add-on lens segments to be produced economically so as, for example, to provide a multi-focal addition to a base single lens and dispensed to a user, the add on segment is molded from a liquid photpolimer and partially cured to a state where it is elastomeric (a gel which holds its shape). The segment is then located upon a surface of the base lens which acts as a substrate where the base lens which acts as a substrate and conforms to the surface even if the surface has special corrective curvature as for astigmatism. The base lens may be a conventional plastic lens (acrylic or polycarbonate). No additional adhesive is required. When in place the curing of the segment is completed so that the multi-focal lens with the segment adhering to the base lens is produced.

摘要: There is disclosed an optical fiber connector for use in glass fiber waveguide transmission systems to provide either a permanent splice or a fiber guide connection which can be disengaged. The connector comprises a sheet of elastically deformable material such as a plastic having opposed major plane surfaces. At least one hole is formed in the material which hole has the same shape and dimension as the fiber portions which are to be inserted into opposite ends of the hole and aligned and joined therein. The hole extending through the sheet of material is parallel to one of its major plane surfaces and is positioned to be nearer to this one surface than to the other surface of the material so that when the material is bent along the axial direction of the hole the hole deforms or elongates to permit removal or insertion of fiber ends to be aligned and held securely therein when the deformation is released and the material goes back to its original shape.
