    Abstract: Phosphorous-containing polymers are prepared by reacting polymers or copolymers of vinyl phosphonic acid dihalides, in which are one or both hydrogens of the CH2= group of the vinyl group may be substituted, with compounds capable of reacting with acid halides. Examples of reactive compounds are water, mono- and poly-hydric alcohols and phenols, alcoholates, hydroxyquinones, mercaptans, mercaptides, thiophenols, enolic compounds, silanols, hydroxypolysiloxanes, aromatic hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons, ammonia, amines, imines, amides, hydrazines and heterocyclic nitrogen compounds. The substituents on the vinyl group may be alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl. Reaction may be effected at temperatures within -50 DEG to 200 DEG C., in the presence or absence of solvents, e.g. ether, methylene chloride or acetone, and catalysts may be used, e.g. metal oxides, hydroxides and chlorides. The examples describe the reaction between polyvinyl phosphonic acid dichloride and (1) 1, 4-butane diol, (2) glycerol, (3) p-phenylene-diamine, (6) cetyl alcohol; and between (4) a copolymer of styrene, divinylbenzene and vinyl phosphonic acid dichloride, and hot water, the product having cation-exchange properties; (5) a copolymer of vinyl phosphonic acid dichloride and methyl methacrylate, and hot water, the product also having cation-exchange properties.
