Abstract: A flue gas containing from 6 to 20 volume percent of sulfur dioxide is passed through a jet scrubber the outlet orifice of which is submerged in the reaction mixture containing SO2 and sodium hydroxide solution. The gas-free saturated sodium hydrogen sulfite solution and the sodium pyrosulfite containing reaction mixture are pump-circulated; the pH being maintained in a range of from 4 to 5 by adding sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate.
