Abstract: A method and an apparatus for discovering a root node, implement dual-root protection in a process of transmitting a multicast data packet over an automatic multicast tunneling (AMT) network, so as to avoid transmission interruption and improve network stability. In the method, a first network device receives a first packet from a multicast source, where the first packet is used to discover a root node; and the first network device sends a response packet for the first packet to the multicast source, where the response packet for the first packet includes address information of the root node, and the root node includes the first network device and a second network device.
