Abstract: The switching device has three spaced electrodes with a gasfilled annular space therebetween. When an axial magnetic field above a certain value is applied to the gas-filled space, and after initiation, cascading ionization occurs for conduction. The electrodes can be electrically serially connected for higher holdoff voltage during nonconduction, or can be electrically connected in parallel for higher current capacity in the same envelope.
