A recognition device which judges whether a target is identical with a predetermined reference, comprising: a holding unit which holds the target; multiple deformation units which deform the target held by the holding unit with at least one degree of flexibility in deformation; multiple deformed amount estimation units which correspond to the deformation units in a one-to-one relationship and estimate a deformed amount of the target from the reference with respect to the flexibility in deformation according to the corresponding deformation unit; an estimated error evaluation unit which evaluates an estimated error of the deformed amount estimated by the deformed amount estimation unit; an adjustment unit which operates any of the deformation units with precedence according to the estimated error evaluated by the estimated error evaluation unit; a similarity calculation unit which calculates a similarity between the reference and the target which is deformed by the deformation unit operated with precedence by the adjustment unit; and a judgment unit which judges whether the target is identical with the reference according to the similarity calculated by the similarity calculation unit.

When neuron operations are computed in parallel using a large number of arithmetic units, arithmetic units for neuron operations and arithmetic units for error signal operations need not be provided separately, and a neural network arithmetic apparatus that consumes the bus band less is provided for updating of synapse connection weights. Operation results of arithmetic units and setting information of a master node are exchanged between them through a local bus. During neuron operations, partial sums of neuron output values from the arithmetic units are accumulated by the master node to generate and output a neuron output value, and an arithmetic unit to which neuron operations of the specific neuron are assigned receives and stores the neuron output value outputted from the master node.

An image processing apparatus includes a map generation unit, a temporary area arrangement unit and a target area detection unit. The map generation unit acquires a map of scores in which each score pertaining to a degree—to which a corresponding unit area of image data is likely to be contained in a target area—is associated with a position of the corresponding unit area. The temporary area arrangement unit arranges a temporary area in a position determined in accordance with a predetermined condition, on the map of scores. The target area detection unit performs, at least once, at least one of: (1) processing of changing the position of the temporary area on the map of scores, and (2) processing of changing a ratio of a length of the temporary area in a predetermined direction to that of the temporary area in an orthogonal direction.
