Abstract: Apparatus and method for controlling fumes in an arc furnace. The fumes are collected by a circumferentially disposed duct whose cross-sectional area increases in the direction of flow. Fumes are introduced into the duct by ports or spaces in the roof of the furnace with the flow passage formed by the spaces or ports in the roof decreasing at the same rate as the duct crosssectional area increases.
