Abstract: The present invention is related to a method and apparatus to avoid overprinting at the end of teleprinter lines on pageprinting teleprinters when a coding signal is used for enciphering of teleprinter messages. This is accomplished by enciphering the first of three procedure characters (two CARRIAGE RETURN and one LINE FEED) in the normal manner while the next two characters are not enciphered. At the receiving end, the first CARRIAGE RETURN is retrieved as normal, and the next two characters are passed in plain text without deciphering.
