[Also in Division B3] Method of jointing two helical waveguides, for transmission in the H 01 mode such as described in Specifications 780,503, 887,063 and 907,114, to avoid reflections, comprises preparing the ends of the waveguides to be joined by cutting along a helical surface separating two adjacent turns of the helix, trimming the ends of each helix, aligning the axes of the helices, and jointing the two waveguides. The cut can extend over one complete turn of the helix, and the end of the helix can be trimmed by a cut at right angles to the wire of the helix. The helical cut can be effected by a milling cutter carried in a rotating shaft parallel to the axis of the waveguide which is rotated and advanced simultaneously, or by a milling cutter following a helical path and a stationary waveguide. Each helical waveguide portion 1, Fig. 2, can be provided on its jointing end with a helical covering 3 of conducting or insulating material which stops short of the end and by a stepped metal sleeve 4 which is cemented to the helical waveguide and which is cut simultaneously with the waveguide portion. Jointing can be effected by cement or by mechanically coupled flanges on the sleeves or by a cemented, screwed or clipped connection to a third sleeve. Modified constructions are described in the Provisional Specification.
