Water sanitizing compositions are disclosed which are comprised of a mixture of trichloroisocyanuric acid and an alkaline earth metal solubility promoting additive selected from the group consisting of the bicarbonate, carbonate, hydroxide, oxide and mixtures thereof of said alkaline earth metal. The compositions have a molar ratio of said additive to trichloroisocyanuric acid of from about 0.3:1 to about 3:1 and a moisture content of less than about 0.2 percent by weight of the compositions.The novel compositions rapidly dissolve in water bodies such as those found in swimming pools, commodes, automatic dishwashers and the like to quickly provide a sanitizing amount of available chlorine for sanitizing the water.

A highly pure cyanuric acid is produced by a process which comprises gradually adding a nitrogenous material capable of producing cyanuric acid, such as urea, to a hot N-methylpyrrolidone solvent. The overall process converts substantially all of the urea to cyanuric acid which, upon drying, is a free flowing product capable of being converted into trichloroisocyanuric acid and similar compounds with a minimum of extra processing while allowing substantially complete recovery of the N-methylpyrrolidone solvent for reuse.

The polychloroisocyanuric acid particles produced have improved filterability and the formation of foam during the reaction is greatly reduced. A process for the production of dibasic magnesium hypochlorite comprises the reaction of a solid magnesium salt and a solid hypochlorite where one of the solid reactants is in the hydrate form. The process produces dibasic magnesium hypochlorite with excellent recovery of chlorine values and with reduced requirements for the disposal of solutions containing available chlorine.Dibasic magnesium hypochlorite, Mg(OCl).sub.2 . 2 Mg(OH).sub.2 is useful in bleaching and sanitizing applications.
