    摘要: The present invention generally provides methods, systems, and articles of manufacture for managing an annotation system that includes storing annotations for a document family, i.e., a series of versions of a data source. Annotations created for one version of the data source may be viewed in context from both subsequent and prior versions of the same data source. Embodiments of the invention associate annotations with both a data source “family identifier” as well as a “version identifier.” Other than adding a family ID to the data source, the data source remains unchanged. The family ID is maintained across different versions of the data source, whereas version IDs are determined for a specific version of the data source. Version IDs can be constructed from each data source directly, and do not need to be stored.

Global annotations are used to annotate a data element independently from the internal representation of a data element employed by a particular software application. An annotation cache may be used to store the global annotations that have been created for a particular data source, improving the efficiency of the global annotation system.

Bits in an indicia map may correspond to different objects (e.g., individual cells in a row or the row itself). Using these indicia maps, an indication of which data objects are annotated may be provided in the view, for example, by displaying annotation icons proximate annotated objects.

    摘要: A graphical query interface provides visual feedback to a user during the construction of a query. In a first embodiment, the visual feedback helps the user determine the quality of the query as the query is being built. The relationship of columns in the database is graphically displayed to a user. When the user selects a column in the database, a filtered display mechanism displays only those columns or records that satisfy the portion of the query already constructed. In a second embodiment, the visual feedback eliminates some possible selections in the query tree due to previously-made selections that eliminate the eliminated selections as possibilities. In the second embodiment, the visual feedback mechanism may function according to data values in columns, and may also function according to known relationships between columns themselves.

    摘要: A graphical query and data mining interface provides visual feedback to a user during the construction of a query that helps the user determine the quality of the query as the query is being built. The graphical query and data mining interface determines relationships in the database from a database relationship document, such as an XML document. These relationships may be between columns, including columns in different tables. The relationship of columns in the database is then graphically displayed to a user. When the user selects a column in the database, a filtered display mechanism displays only those columns or records that satisfy the portion of the query already constructed. In this manner dynamic information is provided to the user as the user builds the query that indicates to the user the quality of the query.
