    Abstract: A rocker arm and a method of making the same are provided. In one form, the rocker arm is of the wrap-around type in which a metal sheet is appropriately symmetrically shaped and is then bent back on itself on the line of symmetry at which one end of the rocker arm body is formed. The two halves are then affixed together by projection welding or the like. The rocker arm has two diverging, downwardly-extending walls formed at the one end of the body with a separate socket member then resistance welded to the walls. The socket member has a central oil opening which supplies oil to a push rod from an oil passage in the rocker arm body. This passage, in turn, communicates with an oil supply passage in a shaft on which the rocker arm is rotatably supported through a hole in a bearing sleeve carried by the rocker arm body. A second, separate passage communicates with the other end of the rocker arm and with the oil supply passage in the shaft through a separate hole in the bearing sleeve. In another form, the rocker arm is made from two separate halves which are again affixed together by projection welding or the like. In this instance, the socket is integrally formed in the two halves by coining.

    Abstract: A rocker arm and method of making same are provided. The rocker arm is of the cam-follower type and is preferably made from a stamped metal piece and a stamped metal strip, the latter preferably being of a hardened alloy. A rounded recess is formed at one end portion of the metal piece and facing away from the metal strip to receive a lifter post having an end on which the rocker arm can pivot. The metal piece also has an additional recess at another end portion to receive an end of a valve stem. The metal strip has an intermediate convex portion facing away from the metal piece to be engaged by a cam. The metal piece has a hole extending through the piece and communicates with the rounded recess while the strip forms a groove communicating with the hole and extending toward the convex portion to supply lubricating fluid from the convex portion to the rounded recess. After the metal piece and the strip are partially stamped, end tabs thereon are welded together and the contiguous portions are brazed, further stamped, and finish formed. The end tabs are then removed and the resulting rocker arm is heat treated and cleaned to complete the process.

    Abstract: A one-piece, cold-formed rocker arm of the cam-follower type is provided. The rocker arm includes a one-piece metal body cold-formed from a metal blank generally in the shape of a rectangular parallelepiped. The rocker arm has a rounded recess formed at one end portion of the metal body to receive a lifter post having an end on which the rocker arm can pivot. An opening flaring upwardly and outwardly from the rounded recess extends through the metal body for lubricating purposes. The metal body also has an additional recess at another end portion to receive an end of a valve stem. An intermediate portion of the body is convex, facing away from the recesses and has a shallow recess in which is received a hardened metal insert to be engaged by a cam. The side of the body opposite the shallow recess has a shallow rectangular projection extending outwardly. The metal body can have gussets extending between the one end portion and the convex portion of the body or the body can have side flanges extending downwardly therefrom, to provide strength and stiffness.

    Abstract: A rocker arm and method of making same are provided.     Abstract: A rocker arm and a method of making the same are provided.
