Abstract: A CONTROL SYSTEM AND FORCE MOTOR ASSEMBLY FOR CONTROLLING THE SKIDDING OF A VEHICLE UNDER BRAKED CONDITIONS WHEN THE CONTROL SYSTEM PROVIDES A SIGNAL FOR CONTROLLING THE POSITION OF AN ARMATURE OR FLUID PRESSURE CONTROLLING DEVICE IN ONE OF THREE CONDITIONS? THE FIRST CONDITION BEING THE "DUMP" MODE OF OPERATION WHEN THE FORCE MOTOR IS CONTROLLED TO PRECLUDE BRAKING PRESSURE FROM BEING SUPPLIED TO THE WHEELS OF THE VEHICLE, THE "HOLD" MODE OF OPERATION WHEN THE BRAKING FORCE PRESENTED AT THE TIME THE SYSTEM GOES INTO THE "HOLD" MODE OF OPERATION IS MAINTAINED, AND THE "RETURN" MODE OF OPERATION IS FULL APPLIED BRAKING PRESSURE IS RETURNED TO THE VEHICLE WHEELS. THE CONTROL SYSTEM IS EFFECTIVELY RESPONSIVE TO A CRITICAL SLIP SIGNAL, THE SIGNAL BEING GENERATED IN RESPONSE TO A SENSED DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HYPOTHETICAL VEHICLE DECELERATION, AS APPROXIMATED BY A DECREASING RAMP SIGNAL, AND THE VEHICLE WHEEL SPEED. THIS COMPARISION IS MADE ON A DIFFERENTIAL BASIS TO PROVIDE AN OUTPUT SIGNAL WHICH IS UTILIZED IN CONTROLLING AN OUTPUT GATE. THE GATE IS ALSO RESPONSIVE TO THE SENSING OF A POSITIVE WHEEL ACCELERATION SIGNAL AND A CHANGE IN SIGN OF THE RATE OF CHANGE OF WHEEL ACCELERATION. THE SIGNAL FROM THE OUTPUT GATE IS FED TO AN OUTPUT LOGIC CIRCUIT, THE OUTPUT LOGIC CURRENT ALSO BEING RENDERED RESPONSIVE TO THE FIRST DERIVATIVE OF THE WHEEL VELOCITY SIGNAL AND A COMBINATION OF FIRST AND SECOND DERIVATIVE OF THE WHEEL VELOCITY SIGNAL.
THE OUTPUT SIGNALS, ARE UTILIZED IN THE OUTPUT LOGIC CIRCUIT TO GENERATE ONE OF THREE SIGNAL CONDITIONS ACROSS THE VOICE COIL OF THE FORCE MOTOR ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY. IN THE RETURN MODE OF OPERATION, THE POLARITY OF THE OUTPUT SIGNALS GENERATED ACROSS THE VOICE COIL ARE OF THE SAME POLARITY TO CAUSE ZERO CURRENT TO FLOW THROUGH THE VOICE COIL. IN THE DUMP MODE OF OPERATION, THE COIL IS PROVIDED WITH CURRENT FLOW IN A FIRST DIRECTION AND IN THE HOLD MODE OF OPERATION THE SOLENOID COIL IN A FIRST DIRECTION AND IN THE HOLD MODE OF OPERATION THE SOLENOID COIL IS SUPPLIED WITH CURRENT FLOWING IN A SECOND DIRECTION OPPOSITE TO THE FIRST DIRECTION. THE FORCE MOTOR IS FABRICATED WITH A THREE POSITIONED ARMATURE WHICH IS ADAPTED TO BE PLACE EITHER IN THE RETURN OR DEACTUATED POSITION, WHERE NO SIGNALS ARE PROVIDED FROM THE CONTROL CIRCUIT, A DUMP MODE OF OPERATION WHICH DISCONNECT THE MANUALLY ACTUATED BRAKE CYLINDER HYDRICALLY TO THE WHEEL CYCLINDERS TO PROVIDE REDUCED BRAKING PRESSURE, AND THE HOLD POSITION WHICH MAINTAIN THE PRESSURE BEING FED TO THE WHEEL AT THE TIME THE HOLD POSITION IS ACHIEVED.-

Abstract: Two embodiments of vehicular skid control systems for relieving the brake pressure when an incipient skid condition is sensed. Each system includes a combined check and bleed valve that controls the flow of hydraulic actuating fluid from a master cylinder to the wheel brakes. An expansion chamber is positioned in the fluid circuit between the check and bleed valve and the wheel brakes. An ancillary source of fluid pressure, such as a power steering pump, normally holds the expansion chamber at a minimum volume condition and holds the check and bleed valve open for normal brake operation. When an incipient skid condition is sensed, the expansion chamber is permitted to increase in volume and the combination check and bleed valve is closed. Closure of the check and bleed valve isolates the master cylinder from the wheel brakes and prevents the application of further pressure to the wheel brakes. Expansion of the expansion chamber relieves the existing pressure in the wheel brakes to prevent skidding. A regulator is provided in the circuit connecting the source of ancillary fluid with the expansion chamber for maintaining at least a predetermined pressure in the circuit. The pressure maintained by the regulator is dependent upon the pressure in the brake circuit. Each embodiment includes fail safe device for providing normal brake operation in the event of failure of the source of ancillary fluid. In one embodiment a fail safe device is provided that bypasses the expansion chamber and the check and bleed valve in the event of failure of the ancillary pressure source to provide sufficient pressure. An indicator provides a visual indication to the vehicle operator when the fail safe device is operative so that the source of failure can be investigated and rectified. In the other embodiment a blocking member is provided for retaining the expansion chamber in a minimum volume position and the check and bleed valve in its opened position in the event of failure of the ancillary fluid pressure source. In each embodiment, certain of the elements are spring biased in opposition to the bias exerted by the source of ancillary fluid pressure so that these elements may be automatically cycled each time the vehicle engine is started and stopped.

Abstract: In a skid control system for a brake system, a master cylinder actuates a pneumatic booster valve which controls a power booster. A hydraulic skid control valve is connected between the master cylinder and the power booster. A pneumatic skid control valve is connected between the pneumatic booster valve and the power booster. A control module actuable upon the occurrence of a skid condition to control the hydraulic and pneumatic skid control valves. Actuation of the hydraulic skid control valve cuts off communication between the master cylinder and power booster and connects the power booster to a reservoir. Actuation of the pneumatic skid control valve deactuates the power booster to release the brakes. When the skid signal is terminated a timeout circuit delays the return of the hydraulic skid control valve to its original position. This enables the power booster to be reactuated and to draw fluid from the reservoir.
