Abstract: 1,050,954. Carrying liquefied gases. LINDE A.G. Feb. 17, 1964 [Feb. 15, 1963], No. 6486/64. Heading B7A. [Also in Division F4] A substantially rectangular or trapezoidal storage container for liquefied gases has walls formed from a plurality of outwardly curved sections and the intersections of the curved sections on two opposite side walls are provided with external supports which bear against fixed walls whereas the intersections on the other two opposite side walls are connected by internal ties or partitions. The rectangular container, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), is supported externally by the walls 27 of a ship and is formed from four vertical part-cylindrical edge sections connected on two opposite sides by upper and lower part cylindrical horizontal edge sections 2, 3, and at the other sides by similar horizontal edge sections 2a. The edge sections are filled in by welded part-cylindrical sections or by rectangular plates 21 which are outwardly bowed in two directions. The external walls may be of single or double walled construction. The sections are preferably joined together by welding adjacent edges to junction pieces which extend inwardly where they are either welded to the partition walls or ties 22, and outwardly where they support the container by means of pivoting supports 24 which allow the container to move vertically or horizontally, and hinged horizontal pivots 23 which allow only vertical movement of the container. The vertical edge plates are provided with upper and lower cylindrical extensions closed by covers 16 and bases 17. Alternatively the outer corners of the container may be formed at the top and bottom by hollow part spherical components 4 fabricated by welding together triangular subsections cut from a part cylindrical plate. In the generally trapezoidal container of Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) the curved sections 35, 36, 37 thereof are hollow part-conical plates the intersections of which are provided with support plates 44 reinforced by transverse ribs 47. The plates 44 carry brackets 46 which coact with plain bearing surfaces 51 secured to the fixed wall of a ship which thereby allow relative horizontal and vertical movement therebetween. The middle support plate 44 along each opposite side wall coacts with a plain bearing surface 49 having lateral guide surfaces 50 which allow only vertical movement of the container. The part-conical corners 35, 36 are reinforced by internal vertical chordal plates 39, 39 1 and internal horizontal apertured plates 41. Horizontal plates 40 are provided for reinforcing the side walls 37.

Abstract: 989,599. Storing liquefied gases. LINDE'S EISMASCHINEN A.G. GES FUR. Nov. 1, 1963 [Nov. 2, 1962], No. 43163/63. Heading F4P. A storage container 1 for liquefied gas has composite walls of welded construction formed from at least two parallel aluminium, aluminium alloy or synthetic weldable material sheets, spaced apart by a distance of from 20- 300 mm. and connected by rib-like spacing members 3 interposed between the sheets at regular intervals. The composite walls, Fig. 1, are formed from a plurality of extruded sections 2 connected together by butt-welds 4, each section consisting of parallel flanges joined together by at least one spacing member 3. The edges of the inner sheets are connected by strips 5 arranged at 45 degrees and the outer sheets by rounded strips 6, the strips 5, 6 being connected by longitudinal members 7, alternatively (Fig. 7, not shown) the edges and corners may be constructed from extruded sections. The container has a dome 11 for vaporized gas and is reinforced by cross-walls 8, 9. The outer sheets may be provided with a layer of heat-insulating material or a vacuum jacket (not shown). In an alternative construction (Fig. 6) the walls comprise three parallel sheets 20, 25, 21 separated by perpendicularly arranged corrugated sheets 26 roller welded, spot welded or soldered thereto. The cells formed within the composite walls between adjacent spring members are sealed individually or in groups, each cell or group of cells being provided with a connection for inert gas.
