A filter comprises a truncated conical filtering element 5 having rings 6, 7 lodged in a portion 2a of a cavity through which fuel for a gas-turbine engine flows from an inlet 3 to an outlet 4, and a truncated conical cup 13 attached to a stem 14 which is slidably mounted in a spigot 10 extending from a perforated cup 9, cup 13 being biased in opposition to the flow of fuel by a compression spring 15 and having a cone angle greater than that of element 5. A proportion of the fuel passes through element 5 into a plurality of passages 8 which are connected to servo-mechanism (not shown) whereas the remainder of the fuel flows over cup 13 to outlet 4 and scours the inner surface of element 5. The cone angle of cup 13 is such that with variations of flow velocity in inlet 3 within a given range the cup moves axially to provide corresponding variations of the cross-sectional area of the space between itself and element 5, whereby the flow velocity in said space is substantially constant. When cup 13 undergoes maximum deflection towards outlet 4 the cross-sectional area is substantially uniform throughout the length of said space and equal to that of inlet 3 and outlet 4.
