Abstract: An optical system is provided, for use in an electronic device, for example of the kind utilizing a head up display system. The optical system comprising: a light-transmitting waveguide substrate configured for receiving input light indicative of an image being projected, guiding said input light s by total internal reflection, and coupling the light out of the substrate to propagate along an output path in a predetermined direction; at least one transparent optical element accommodated in said output path and interfacing at least a portion of a surface of said waveguide substrate; an interface region between at least a portion of the surface of said waveguide substrate and a surface of the optical element being a patterned interface configured to provide optical coupling between the waveguide substrate and said optical element while maintaining the total internal reflection condition R of light propagation within said light-transmitting waveguide.

Abstract: There is provided an optical system, including a light-transmitting substrate (20) having at least two external major surfaces and edges, an optical element for coupling light waves into the substrate (20) by internal reflection, at least one partially reflecting surface located in the substrate (20), for coupling light waves out of the substrate (20), at least one transparent air gap film (110) including a base (112) and a hyperfine structure (111) defining a relief formation, constructed on the base, wherein the air gap film is attached to one of the major surfaces of the substrate (20), with the relief formation facing the substrate (20) defining an interface plane (58), so that the light waves coupled inside the substrate (20) are substantially totally reflected from the interface plane (58).

Abstract: A light-guide optical element (LOE) and methods of manufacture are disclosed. The LOE includes a transparent substrate having a first refractive index, the substrate having a pair of parallel external surfaces along a length thereof, and a plurality of mutually parallel at least partially reflective internal surfaces, the mutually parallel internal surfaces being angled obliquely relative to the pair of external surfaces; and a transparent polymer resin encapsulating at least a part of the substrate to form an encapsulated structure, the polymer resin having a second refractive index that is matched to the first refractive index; wherein the encapsulated structure comprises a pair of parallel external surfaces of optical quality formed from the resin.

Abstract: An optical system includes a light-transmitting substrate having at least two external major surfaces and edges and an optical element for coupling light waves into the substrate, by total internal reflection. At least one partially reflecting surface is located in the substrate for coupling light waves out of the substrate, and at least one transparent layer, having a refractive index substantially lower than the refractive index of the light transmitting substrate is optically attached to at least one of the major surfaces of the substrate, defining an interface plane. The light waves coupled inside the substrate are substantially totally reflected from the interface plane between the major surface of the substrate and the transparent layer.

Abstract: An optical structure and corresponding process of manufacture for light guide optical elements (LOEs) which guide light by reflection at major surfaces. The structure further includes light directing surfaces for coupling light out of the LOE, obliquely inclined with respect to the major surfaces. The optical structure is formed from a stack of multiple optically transparent layers each of which has a surface pattern of regions configured as light directing surfaces which are arranged in an X-Z plane in a spaced-apart relationship along at least the X-axis with optically transparent regions between them. The layers are stacked along a Y-axis so that each of the surface patterns is located at an interface between two adjacent layers and the patterns of the layers are aligned with a shift of a predetermined value along one or both of the X-axis and Z-axis.
