Abstract: A seat cushion formed from a body comprising a plurality of extruded polymer filaments randomly connected to form a first three-dimensional mesh structure formed by the extruded polymer filaments. The body is formed by heating an area of the body with an ultrasonic tool that modifies a portion of the extruded polymer filaments to form a second three-dimensional structure comprising a second shape that is different than the first shape. A skin of extruded polymer film is welded to the body of extruded polymer filaments. A second body of a plurality of extruded polymer filaments randomly connected to form a second three-dimensional mesh structure formed by the extruded polymer filaments is welded to the first body. A method is disclosed for modifying the bodies with an ultrasonic tool to shape or weld the bodies.

Abstract: A vehicle seating system includes a seat bottom and a seat back pivotably connected to the seat bottom. A first motor may operate to pivot the seat back relative to the seat bottom with a first gearing. A second motor may operate to pivot the seat back relative to the seat bottom with a second gearing. A transmission member may be disposed between the first motor and the second motor such that operation of the first motor drives the first gearing and rotates the elongate transmission member, thereby driving the second gearing.

Abstract: A method is provided with a stranded mesh material blank inserted into a cavity of a tool assembly shaped to form a cushion member. Fluid is circulated above a first temperature threshold through a series of apertures defined in a forming surface of the tool assembly and into the cavity thereby softening the blank and conforming a shape of the blank to the forming surface. Fluid is circulated below a second temperature threshold through the series of apertures in the forming surface and into the cavity thereby setting the shape of the blank to the forming surface and forming a cushion member. A cushion for a seat assembly is provided by a stranded mesh material member. A system is provided with a first tool, a second tool, and one or more inlet manifolds.

Abstract: Cushions, methods, and manufacturing systems for making the same are disclosed. The cushions may be foamless such as being made from a body of entangled and/or intertwined polymeric strands. The manufacturing systems may include a die such as die bars having a plurality of orifices that cooperate with a plurality of receptacles and actuators for discharging a plurality of fasteners from the receptacles, through the die into the cushions. In a refinement, the die may be heated such that a skinned over membrane is created in the cushion to retain the plurality of fasteners. A trim cover may cooperate with the plurality of fasteners such that it is attached to the cushion.

Abstract: A vehicle seat assembly and a method of controlling a vehicle seat assembly are provided. The vehicle seat assembly has a seat back frame rotatably connected to a support frame, and a seat back frame positioning assembly connected to the support frame and the seat back frame. The seat back frame positioning assembly has an electric motor, and a worm connected to the motor shaft for rotation. The seat back frame positioning assembly has a reduction gearset with a first gear in meshed engagement with the worm and driving a second gear. The second gear is connected to the support frame. A controller controls the motor such that the motor shaft rotates at a first speed and at a second speed greater than the first speed, with the seat back frame is rotated relative to the support frame in response to rotation of the motor shaft.

Abstract: A system and method for positioning a seat arrangement in a vehicle includes moving the seat arrangement forward by a first amount when a certain criteria are met. The criteria may include at least one criterion related to occupancy of a seat directly behind the seat arrangement and at least one criterion related to a likelihood of an impact into the vehicle from behind the seat arrangement. The method may also include not moving the seat arrangement forward by the first amount when at least one of the criteria is not met.
