Abstract: A method for cooling a soleplate of an iron, the method comprising: flowing a cooling fluid adjacent at least a portion of the soleplate; and transferring heat energy from the soleplate to the cooling fluid. A device for removing wrinkles from fabric, the device comprising: a soleplate; a heater element associated with the soleplate so as to heat the soleplate; and a housing of the soleplate and heater element connected to one of the soleplate and heater element, wherein the housing comprises a cooling fluid vent, wherein a cooling fluid is passable through the cooling fluid vent so that heat energy is transferred from one of the soleplate and the heater element to the cooling fluid. A device for removing wrinkles from fabric, the device comprising: a soleplate comprising a thickness less than 2.0 mm; a heater element associated with the soleplate so as to heat the soleplate; at least one turbulator associated with the soleplate; a fan associated with the soleplate so as to pump a cooling fluid in heat-transfer communication with at least a portion of the soleplate, whereby heat energy is transferred from the soleplate to the cooling fluid; and a controller in signal communication with the fan.

Abstract: A coffee brewing unit is disclosed which enables a brew cycle to be initiated manually or automatically at a preset time, but which prevents a brew cycle from proceeding if a number of required operating conditions are not implemented. If all operating conditions again become implemented after a brew cycle, once underway, is interrupted, the brew cycle continues on to completion. Visual and audible signals indicate the current status of the brew cycle and/or of the brewing unit itself. An insulated carafe is used as the vessel to receive brewed coffee thereby eliminating the need for a warmer plate. The unit may be mounted under a cabinet to thereby maximize usable countertop space and the brew basket utilizes a dispensing valve which is opened by the carafe when inserted into position but which closes when the carafe is withdrawn. A thermostat which is used in association with the water generator for the unit has a manual reset switch which is actuated by a self contained water reservoir when moved into its operating position.

Abstract: An electrical appliance, such as a pressing iron (10), includes a user proximity sensor for removing electrical power from the appliance after a period of non-use. When a user's hand is in close proximity to, or is in a grasping relationship with, a handle (28) of the pressing iron, an antenna (44) that is disposed within the handle is capacitively coupled to the user through a dielectric material that forms the handle wall. When so coupled to the user, a displacement current having a frequency equal to the AC line electrical power frequency signal (50 Hz or 60 Hz) is capacitively coupled between the user's body and the antenna. The displacement current is detected and amplified by circuitry (60) that is connected to the antenna by a conductor (46). This circuitry outputs a signal that indicates the proximity of the user to the handle of the pressing iron. The output signal is in turn employed to disable the operation of a time-out circuit (70). When the user is not in proximity to the handle of the pressing iron, the output signal is not generated and, after a predetermined time-out period, electrical power is automatically removed from a heating element (86) of the pressing iron.
