    Abstract: Cylindrical cans each with one closed and one open end are metered one-by-one between a rotating driving wheel and a guide concentric thereto, each having a resilient rim that grasps each can by the closed end and rotates it in contact with a rotating printing wheel so as to imprint a band of ink completely around the can; and the can is then discharged downwardly onto a ramp guide on which it rolls in the direction of spin, away from and out of the apparatus. The ramp guide includes levers activated by the can to inhibit metering of the cans into the apparatus if there is a stoppage and backing up of the can flow; and to meter a predetermined amount of ink to the printing wheel on passage of each can, so that just the right amount of ink is printed on, regardless of the rate of flow of the cans.

    Abstract: Cans rolling on a track are inspected by photoelectric means for the presence or absence of a circumferential marking band, and in accordance with the sensing made, are either permitted to continue rolling on the track, or are dropped through to a lower track. To carry out the drop, the upper track is formed with a number of discrete segments displaceable outboardly, the upstream pair of segments being operated by electromagnets under the control of the inspection means to initiate the drop, and the upstream sides of the segments having cam surfaces engageable by a can that has already begun to drop to cause full displacement of the segment and a continuation of the drop. Each segment is shorter than the radius of a can so that it closes in behind a dropping can before the next following can arrives.

    Abstract: For articles such as rectangular or cylindrical containers or cans, a conveyor guide of the chute type has a number of parallel rails affixed to transverse rib members at intervals along the path of the articles, the ribs in one example being hoop-like rectangular frames arrayed to enclose the moving articles with rails on all the lateral sides. The rails are affixed by means of clamping fasteners each of which is secured to the adjacent rib by a bolt piercing the rib normal to the direction of the path. The fastener can rotate on the bolt so as to permit alignment of the rail at an angle to the rib. Thus at bends in the path, or places where the guide twists to change the vertical orientation of the articles, the rails may be smoothly curved to conform to the path without crimping at the fasteners. The rails are made of springy resilient material to assist this effect. The fasteners are relieved, at least on the side facing the ribs, to improve the clamping effect when the bolts are tightened.
