An installation for storing liquids comprises a pit with an upwardly-open recess and a tank 10 for the liquid to be stored, the tank being received within the recess and having top 11, side 12 and bottom 13 walls of flexible sheet material and rain-water, river-water sea-water or other liquid 23 continuously present within the recess beneath the bottom wall 13 of the tank. The recess may be lined by water-impermeable sheet material 17 which is apertured so that the pit communicates with an overflow pipe 25 which limits the height to which the liquid within the recess outside the tank can rise within the recess.
