    Abstract: Example embodiments describe an optical line terminal (OLT) configured to communicate in a point-to-multipoint optical network with optical network units (ONUs); where upstream burst signals originating from one or more ONUs can be received by the OLT at any time during a time window. The OLT is configured to perform, during the time window, initiating a tuning cycle by starting the tuning of one or more burst receiver components within the OLT. The OLT is further configured to perform, if detecting a burst signal within a first period, extending the tuning cycle by a second period to continue the tuning of the one or more burst receiver components. The OLT is further configured to perform, if detecting at least pattern within the second period, extending the tuning cycle to decode the burst signal; else, terminating the tuning cycle by initiating a next tuning cycle.

    Abstract: Example embodiments describe an optical line terminal, OLT, configured to communicate in a passive optical network with one or more optical network units, ONUs. Optical burst signals transmitted by the one or more ONUs have respective symbol rates. The optical line terminal includes a burst-mode receiver configured to decode an optical burst signal from an ONU to a decoded output signal by one or more digital signal processing circuitries that process a signal at respective configurable processing rates. The optical line terminal is configured to perform obtaining the symbol rate of a next optical burst signal; and adjusting, during an interval between reception of valuable symbols within a previous optical burst signal and reception of valuable symbols within the next optical burst signal, the configurable processing rate of one or more digital signal processing circuitries based on the symbol rate of the next optical burst signal.

    Abstract: Example embodiments describe an optical network unit, ONU, configured to transmit data to an optical line terminal, OLT, during upstream timeslots within a passive optical network; wherein the ONU includes a scrambler circuitry configured to scramble at least one data stream according to a periodic scrambling pattern, and a descrambler circuitry configured to descramble the at least one scrambled data stream according to the periodic scrambling pattern; and wherein the ONU further includes at least one data channel for exchanging the at least one scrambled data stream between the scrambler circuitry and the descrambler circuitry; and wherein the scrambler circuitry is further configured to perform, during a period between the upstream timeslots: scrambling a predetermined reference sequence according to the periodic scrambling pattern, thereby obtaining a scrambled reference sequence; and sending the scrambled reference sequence to the descrambler circuitry over the at least one data channel.

    Abstract: An apparatus configured to perform obtaining a stream of codewords, including a first type codeword and a second type codeword, wherein, the first type codeword is an idle codeword, and the second type codeword includes data intended for at least one of the ONUs; obtaining, an interleaved bitstream from the stream of codewords based on an interleaving scheme, wherein, in the interleaved bitstream, bits at positions corresponding the first type codeword include redundant bits, and bits at positions corresponding to the second type codeword include information bits; determining values for one or more redundant bits placed between two adjacent information bits in the interleaved bitstream based on the values of either or both of the two adjacent information bits; and transmitting the interleaved bitstream to one or more of the ONUs.
